Oil money to Hidros

by Zawya Dow Jones

Emiratos ArabesThe United Arab Emirates will spend at least $40 billion in the next eight to 10 years on power and water projects, even as Dubai studies scaling down its demand projections, a senior official at an international water desalination organisation said Monday.

"We are talking significant investments to create a river of water," said Leon Awerbuch, chairman of the IDA Technical Programs at the non-profit International Desalination Association.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai plan to add combined water desalination capacity of at least 1 billion gallons in the coming 10 years, Awerbuch said.

Energy and water requirements have risen rapidly in the Arab Gulf region in recent years as governments have embarked on spending billions of dollars in oil revenues on developing industries and infrastructure to diversify their economies and to accommodate their growing populations.

Hydro Green Energy's hydrokinetic turbineLast-minute attempts to influence license-renewal process at Alcoa’s facilities could undermine attractiveness of a clean source of energy.

Efforts by state and local officials to take control of Alcoa Inc.’s hydroelectric facilities along the Yadkin River are a challenge to those who support the competitive development of clean, affordable and domestic energy resources.

Hydropower is the United States’ largest renewable resource. It generates 6% to 8% of the nation’s electricity. Three-quarters of all electricity produced by renewables comes from hydropower. According to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, hydropower can double its capacity during the next 20 years.

Up to 10,000MW of hydro power can be exported via S’wak-Johor cable

submarine cableMIRI: Sarawak can export up to 10,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity when its hydroelectric power (HEP) is fully developed following the cabinet’s nod for the Sarawak-Johor submarine cable project to proceed.

It would enable the state, with the RM6 billion Bakun hydro-electric dam project in central Sarawak, to take the first step in supplying power to the peninsula to meet its domestic and industrial needs.

Bakun can generate 2,400 MW and is expected to be operational by 2011, providing power to Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia through the first undersea cable link in 2013, which passes through Indonesian waters, followed by the second cable in 2015.
